The Lost Tradition

Jesus' life and teaching were rooted in a different way of seeing reality. As a deeply mystical teacher of the West, Jesus helped awaken others to what it meant to be spiritually alive. Today, Jesus can still help us awaken to a new way of perceiving the world around us. The intent of this class is to awaken us to this wisdom, and to learn to see as the mystics see as we slow down and find God, or are found by God in all the places we never thought to look!

Class will include time for discussion of text and periodic videos, sharing of personal experiences, as well as individual practice of preferred mode of contemplative prayer (centering prayer, awareness practice, contemplative prayer, meditation, etc.) This is an open class, new members are welcome!

Recommended text: The Naked Now, Learning to See as the Mystics See by Richard Rohr.

Living Buddha, Living Christ

The Buddha and Christ are perhaps two of the most pivotal figures in the history of humankind. Each left behind amazing teachings and the spiritual tradition that evolved from each legacy has shaped the lives of billions of people over the course of 2000 years.

Journey this fall with Thich Nhat Hanh, a revered Buddhist teacher and peacemaker, who bridges the dialogue between East and West.   In his seminal book, LivingBuddha, Living Christ, he brings us a deeper appreciation of how these two traditions meet while reawakening the depth of understanding about our Christian faith.    Brief weekly readings will be assigned as homework and time set aside in class to discuss the awakening that comes from this cross-pollination.  Additionally, in keeping with the contemplative path of both traditions, time is reserved during each class for meditation/contemplative prayer. This is a one-semester course.

Text: Living Buddha, Living Christ by Thich Nhat Hanh.

Quiet Garden Days: A Ministry of Hospitality and Prayer

SPRING QUIET GARDEN DAY
APRIL 11, 2010, 3:00-5:00 PM

"But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit." 2 Corinthians 3:16-18 (NIV)

COME! You are invited for a day of quiet contemplation in the garden with the community of Gardener’s House of Prayer. This is a time for renewal — starting where you are and deepening your connection with God. Following is a time for reflection and optional sharing.

A Quiet Garden Day is an opportunity to set aside time to rest and pray, a time of stillness and reflection, an oasis of withdrawal and meeting, of spiritual refreshment and support, an area of beauty and peacefulness dedicated to quiet prayer and solitude. All are welcome: all faith traditions, lay persons and clergy. Come!
